Best eSIM for Japan (2026): Prices Compared and How to Choose

Japan is one of the easiest countries to stay connected in: networks are dense, cities are well covered, and eSIM setup is routine. The hard part is choosing among dozens of near-identical plans, so this guide starts with the question that matters: how much data will you actually use?

Our take
1–2 weeks: a 5–10 GB fixed plan from Nomad or Saily

Japan plans from these providers are data-only. Keep your home SIM for SMS codes.

Step 1: Estimate your data

A rough rule we use when planning: navigation, messaging and light browsing run in the hundreds of megabytes per day, while video streaming, video calls and uploading lots of photos can use several gigabytes per day. These are general estimates, not measurements, and your usage depends heavily on app settings (for example, whether your photos auto-upload to the cloud).

Week-long trip, maps and messaging, hotel Wi-Fi at night

3–5 GB fixed plan

Two weeks, lots of photos and social posts

10–20 GB fixed, or unlimited

Remote work, tethering a laptop

50 GB or generous unlimited

For tethering, check each plan's hotspot rules before you buy.

Step 3: Check the network and the fine print

  • Networks. Airalo lists SoftBank (plus others); Holafly lists KDDI and SoftBank; Saily names KDDI and SoftBank as local partners. Japan's main networks cover cities well; all of these providers warn that remote mountains and islands can be weaker.
  • Unlimited isn't always unlimited. Saily's unlimited is 5 GB/day at full speed, then 1 Mbps. Nomad says speed drops to 1 Mbps after the daily high-speed allowance. Holafly mentions a fair-usage policy that can slow speeds for up to a day, and limits hotspot sharing to 1 GB per day.
  • Activation windows. Saily gives 180 days to activate; Nomad auto-starts a Japan plan 60 days after purchase if you haven't used it.
  • No phone number. These Japan plans are data-only; Holafly and Nomad say so explicitly. Keep your home SIM for SMS codes.

Our take

For most visitors on a one- to two-week trip, a 5–10 GB fixed plan from Nomad or Saily costs a fraction of an unlimited plan and is enough if you use hotel Wi-Fi for heavy tasks. If you know you'll stream, video call or tether a lot, the unlimited packages from Airalo and Holafly are close in price. Pick the one whose rules (hotspot cap, refunds) suit you.

Before you fly

  1. Check your phone

Confirm it is unlocked and eSIM-capable (how to check).

  2. Install at home

Install the eSIM on Wi-Fi, but keep its line off until you land (install guide).

  3. Switch on when you land

Turn on the travel line, enable data roaming for that line, and set it as your mobile-data line.

  4. Check entry rules

Check entry requirements on official government sources before you go. If you need visa or travel-document help, services such as iVisa exist, but the official government site is always the authority.
