Why France is different

Prices are low. 10 GB for 30 days costs $10 from Ubigi and $14 from Nomad, and Ubigi’s 30 days of unlimited ($39) is below Maya’s global plan ($49.99).

Networks differ by provider. Ubigi lists all four French networks: Bouygues Telecom, Free Mobile, Orange and SFR. Nomad lists Free Mobile and Orange. Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Yesim and Maya didn’t name one on the pages we read.

Many trips cross borders. Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and Spain are a train ride away. Compare a Europe plan if France is one stop of several.

Quick picks

Most trips

A week or two, normal use

A 10 GB / 30-day fixed plan. Ubigi listed $10, Nomad $14 and Saily $16.99.

No counting

Heavy use or tethering

A week of unlimited costs $19.99 on Maya’s global plan or $20 from Ubigi. For 30 days, Ubigi’s $39 is the lowest.

All networks

Rural France and the mountains

Ubigi lists Bouygues Telecom, Free Mobile, Orange and SFR. 50 GB for 30 days costs $29, the lowest of that size.

Several countries

France plus Italy, Spain or beyond

A Europe plan may be simpler. Airalo listed 15 days of unlimited Europe data for $49.00 (see one country or several).

Step 1: Size your plan for France

Maps, ride-hailing, transit apps and messaging use little data. Uploading photos and videos and making video calls use much more. As a rough guide, maps and messaging use hundreds of megabytes a day, while video and video calls can use several gigabytes. These are general estimates, not measurements.

Under a week, maps, messages and transport apps

3–5 GB fixed plan

1–2 weeks, photos, social apps and video

10–20 GB fixed, or unlimited

Remote work, video calls, tethering a laptop

Unlimited, after checking its fair-use and hotspot rules

Lowest listed price in the row — means no plan of that length was listed. Holafly ($3.90) and Yesim ($4.20) also sell a single day. Maya sells one global unlimited plan at the same price for every country: $9.99 for 3 days, $19.99 for 7, $27.99 for 14 and $49.99 for 30 (see Maya). Official pages, checked 4 November 2026.

Airalo also lists shorter versions (for example 10 GB for 7 days at $16.00). Ubigi also lists 10 GB for 7 days ($8), 25 GB for 30 days ($19), and longer plans: 60 GB for 12 months ($22), 100 GB for 360 days ($58), 240 GB for 12 months ($72) and 200 GB for 360 days ($99). Yesim also lists 30 GB for $33.60. Official pages, checked 4 November 2026.

One country, or several?

Plans on this page are sold for France. If your trip crosses borders, a Europe plan can be simpler: Airalo listed 15 days of unlimited Europe data for $49.00 and Holafly $51.50 (see our Europe guide). EU “roam like at home” rules apply to SIMs from EU operators; check each provider’s coverage list rather than assuming a single-country plan works next door.

Step 3: Check the fine print

  • Networks. Ubigi: Bouygues Telecom, Free Mobile, Orange and SFR. Nomad: Free Mobile and Orange. The others didn’t name one.
  • Unlimited isn’t always unlimited. Ubigi says data sharing is allowed but a fair-use policy may apply. Holafly’s plans are unlimited by the day. Where it states a hotspot rule (its Canada and Italy pages), sharing is limited to 1 GB a day, so check the plan page if you plan to tether. Airalo’s France page didn’t state a fair-use limit.
  • Activation windows. Nomad starts a plan automatically 60 days after purchase if you haven’t used it. Saily gives 180 days. Ubigi’s plan starts when you arrive.
  • No French number. These plans are data-only. Saily sells an optional US phone number, and Yesim offers a 20-minute calling add-on.

What to watch

Its France page doesn’t name a network or state a fair-use limit, and 10 GB for 30 days ($17.00) costs more than Ubigi’s or Nomad’s.

What stands out

The simplest choice: pick the number of days and get unlimited data. A single day costs $3.90, and every eSIM includes Always On backup.

What to watch

The most expensive here for 10 days or more, and the France page doesn’t name a network.

From the company behind NordVPN. 10 GB for 30 days costs $16.99, you get 180 days to activate, and you can add a US phone number.

What to watch

Nothing above 20 GB, and we couldn’t read its unlimited price for each length.

What to watch

A fair-use policy may apply to unlimited plans, and there’s no 1 GB or 20 GB option.

Yesim

What stands out

The cheapest small plan here (1 GB for 30 days at $3.00), and every fixed plan lasts 30 days.

What to watch

It doesn’t name a network, and its 10 GB ($19.20) and week of unlimited ($29.40) are the highest here.

Maya

One global planAuto-renews
3 days
$9.99unlimited data
7 days
$19.99unlimited data
30 days
$49.99unlimited data

What stands out

The lowest price we found for 3 or 7 days of unlimited data, and one plan if France is one stop of several. It’s one global plan, so the same eSIM keeps working if France is one stop of several. Maya’s page says "No caps, no throttling."

What to watch

It renews automatically while Travel Mode is on, so turn it off when you get home. The page we read doesn’t name the local networks or spell out a fair-use policy, and we haven’t tested the no-throttling claim.

Will your phone work?

  • eSIM-capable and unlocked. Apple lists iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later. Settings → General → About should say "No SIM restrictions" next to Carrier Lock (full checklist).
  • Bought in mainland China? Apple says that in China mainland only the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM. Many older mainland models use two physical SIM cards instead, so check for Add eSIM in your settings before you buy a plan.
  • Bought in Hong Kong or Macau? Apple notes that certain iPhone models sold there have two nano-SIM slots. Check for Add eSIM in your settings first.
  • Install before you fly. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and leave the line switched off until you land (install guide).

Entry: EES now, ETIAS later

The Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at Schengen external borders since 10 April 2026. If you’re a non-EU visitor on a short stay, your first crossing records a face image and four fingerprints (children under 12 give no fingerprints). It’s free, and there’s nothing to apply for in advance. Allow extra time at the border on your first trip.

ETIAS, the travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, isn’t operating yet, according to the EU’s official Travel to Europe site. You can’t apply for it, and you don’t need it to visit France today.

Don’t pay for ETIAS yet

Some websites already sell “ETIAS applications”. ETIAS isn’t running, and EES is free, so you don’t need to pay anyone for either.

Our take

France is cheap for travel data. Ubigi’s 10 GB for 30 days at $10 is the lowest-cost plan here, and it lists all four networks. Nomad’s $14 is the next lowest. For a week of unlimited, Maya ($19.99) and Ubigi ($20) are almost level.

Before you fly

  1. Decide: France or Europe

If you’re visiting more than one country, compare a Europe plan before buying a single-country one.

  2. Buy and install at home

Check your phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable (how to check), then install on Wi-Fi before departure. With Nomad, don’t buy more than 60 days ahead.

  3. Switch on when you land

Turn on the travel line, enable data roaming for that line, and set it as your mobile-data line.

  4. Allow time at the border

Your first EES entry records your face and fingerprints. It’s free and needs no application.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the cheapest France eSIM?

On the official pages we checked (4 November 2026), 1 GB started at $3 (Yesim, 30 days), and Ubigi listed 3 GB for 30 days at $4. For 10 GB over 30 days, Ubigi listed $10.

Which network do France travel eSIMs use?

Ubigi lists Bouygues Telecom, Free Mobile, Orange and SFR, and Nomad lists Free Mobile and Orange. Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Yesim and Maya didn’t name a network on the pages we read.

Should I buy a France eSIM or a Europe eSIM?

For France only, a country plan is usually cheaper. If you’re crossing borders, a Europe plan saves buying several; Airalo listed 15 days of unlimited Europe data for $49.00.

Do I need ETIAS for France?

Not yet. ETIAS isn’t operating, according to the EU’s Travel to Europe site. The Entry/Exit System is running: non-EU short-stay visitors give a face image and fingerprints at the border, free of charge.

Is unlimited data really unlimited in France?

Check the terms. Ubigi says a fair-use policy may apply, and Holafly limits hotspot sharing on the pages where it states a rule. Maya says its plan has no caps or throttling.

Do France eSIMs come with a phone number?

No, these plans are data-only. Saily sells an optional US number, and Yesim has a 20-minute calling add-on. Keep your home SIM on for SMS codes.
