Best eSIM for Portugal (2026): prices, MEO, NOS and Vodafone, and EES

Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, Madeira and the Azores: Portugal trips lean on trams, trains, ride-hailing and maps. Fixed data here is some of the cheapest in Europe. This guide compares seven travel eSIM providers using only their official pages, and covers the EU’s new border system.

Portugal at a glance

Checked 4 November 2026
Cheapest plan listed
$31 GB / 30 days, Yesim (Saily: 1 GB / 7 days for $3.99)
7 days unlimited
$19Ubigi (Maya’s global plan: $19.99)
10 GB for 30 days
$11Airalo and Ubigi
20 GB for 30 days
$19.00Airalo (Nomad: $20)

These Portugal plans are data-only, with no local phone number. Keep your home SIM on for bank and app SMS codes.

Why Portugal is different

All three operators appear. Airalo names NOS, Nomad lists Vodafone and MEO, and Ubigi lists MEO. Holafly, Saily, Yesim and Maya didn’t name one on the pages we read.

Airalo is cheap here. Its Portugal page lists 10 GB for 30 days at $11.00 and 20 GB at $19.00, lower than Airalo charges for 10 GB in Spain ($14.00), Germany ($16.00) or France ($17.00).

Islands count. Madeira and the Azores are part of Portugal, so a Portugal plan should cover them, but check the provider’s coverage map if you’re heading somewhere remote.

Quick picks

Most trips

A week or two, normal use

A 10 GB / 30-day plan for $11 from Airalo (on NOS) or Ubigi (on MEO).

No counting

Heavy use or tethering

Ubigi listed a week of unlimited for $19 and 30 days for $48; Maya’s global plan is $19.99 and $49.99.

Two networks

Vodafone and MEO

Nomad lists two Portuguese networks. 10 GB for 30 days costs $16 and 20 GB $20.

Portugal and Spain

Or more countries

A Europe plan may be simpler. Airalo listed 15 days of unlimited Europe data for $49.00.

Step 1: Size your plan for Portugal

Maps, ride-hailing, transit apps and messaging use little data. Uploading photos and videos and making video calls use much more. As a rough guide, maps and messaging use hundreds of megabytes a day, while video and video calls can use several gigabytes. These are general estimates, not measurements.

Under a week, maps, messages and transport apps

3–5 GB fixed plan

1–2 weeks, photos, social apps and video

10–20 GB fixed, or unlimited

Remote work, video calls, tethering a laptop

Unlimited, after checking its fair-use and hotspot rules

Maya sells one global unlimited plan at the same price for every country: $9.99 for 3 days, $19.99 for 7, $27.99 for 14 and $49.99 for 30 (see Maya). Official pages, checked 4 November 2026.

Airalo also lists shorter versions (for example 10 GB for 7 days at $10.00). Ubigi also lists 10 GB for 7 days ($9) and 25 GB for 30 days ($28). Yesim also lists 30 GB for $33.60. One country, or several?

Plans on this page are sold for Portugal. If your trip crosses borders, a Europe plan can be simpler: Airalo listed 15 days of unlimited Europe data for $49.00 and Holafly $51.50 (see our Europe guide). EU “roam like at home” rules apply to SIMs from EU operators; check each provider’s coverage list rather than assuming a single-country plan works next door.

Step 3: Check the fine print

  • Networks. Airalo: NOS. Nomad: Vodafone and MEO. Ubigi: MEO. The others didn’t name one.
  • Unlimited isn’t always unlimited. Ubigi says a fair-use policy may apply. Holafly’s Portugal page didn’t state a hotspot limit; on pages where it does, sharing is 1 GB a day.
  • Activation windows. Nomad starts a plan automatically 60 days after purchase if you haven’t used it. Saily says all plans have a 180-day activation period; after that the plan starts automatically. Ubigi’s plan starts when you arrive.
  • Hotspot. Yesim says hotspot depends on the operator, and gives 180 days from purchase to activate.
  • No local number. These plans are data-only. Saily sells an optional US phone number, and Yesim offers a 20-minute calling add-on.

What stands out

Just behind Ubigi for a week ($19.99 against $19), and one plan if Portugal is one stop of several. It’s one global plan, so the same eSIM keeps working if Portugal is one stop of several. Maya’s page says "No caps, no throttling."

What to watch

It renews automatically while Travel Mode is on, so turn it off when you get home. The page we read doesn’t name the local networks or spell out a fair-use policy, and we haven’t tested the no-throttling claim.

Will your phone work?

  • eSIM-capable and unlocked. Apple lists iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later. Settings → General → About should say "No SIM restrictions" next to Carrier Lock (full checklist).
  • Bought in mainland China? Apple says that in China mainland only the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM. Many older mainland models use two physical SIM cards instead, so check for Add eSIM in your settings before you buy a plan.
  • Bought in Hong Kong or Macau? Apple notes that certain iPhone models sold there have two nano-SIM slots. Check for Add eSIM in your settings first.
  • Install before you fly. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and leave the line switched off until you land (install guide).

Entry: EES now, ETIAS later

The Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at Schengen external borders since 10 April 2026. If you’re a non-EU visitor on a short stay, your first crossing records a face image and four fingerprints (children under 12 give no fingerprints). It’s free, and there’s nothing to apply for in advance. Allow extra time at the border on your first trip.

ETIAS, the travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, isn’t operating yet, according to the EU’s official Travel to Europe site. You can’t apply for it, and you don’t need it to visit Portugal today.

Don’t pay for ETIAS yet

Some websites already sell “ETIAS applications”. ETIAS isn’t running, and EES is free, so you don’t need to pay anyone for either.

Our take

For most trips, 10 GB for 30 days at $11 from Airalo or Ubigi is the best value. For unlimited, Ubigi is cheapest. If you want two networks, Nomad lists Vodafone and MEO.

Before you fly

  1. Decide: Portugal or Europe

If you’re visiting more than one country, compare a Europe plan before buying a single-country one.

  2. Buy and install at home

Check your phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable (how to check), then install on Wi-Fi before departure. With Nomad, don’t buy more than 60 days ahead.

  3. Switch on when you land

Turn on the travel line, enable data roaming for that line, and set it as your mobile-data line.

  4. Plan for the islands

Flying to Madeira or the Azores? Download offline maps before you go and check the provider’s coverage list.

Ubigi: $19 for 7 days and $48 for 30. Maya’s global plan is $19.99 and $49.99.

Does a Portugal eSIM work in Madeira and the Azores?
