Adapter notes
- Check the charger label first. Phone, tablet, laptop and camera chargers marked 100–240V 50/60Hz only need a plug adapter, even in Japan (100 V) or North America (120 V).
- Single-voltage appliances (often hair dryers, straighteners, travel kettles) can overheat on 220–240 V, or run weakly on 100–127 V. Leave them at home or buy a dual-voltage model.
- Europe: the IEC describes the two-pin Type C “Europlug” as fitting any socket that takes 4.0–4.8 mm round pins, which covers the C, E, F, J and L sockets in our European destinations. Grounded plugs are a different story, so check the socket type for each stop.
- Type G (UK, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, UAE, Sri Lanka): one adapter covers all of them.
- Type I (Australia, New Zealand, China mainland) and Type A/B (US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan) need their own adapters; 2-pin Type A plugs fit Type B sockets.
- A multi-port USB charger means one adapter can top up phone, watch and power bank together. That matters because an eSIM lives in your phone.
Before you fly, size your data with the eSIM data calculator, check your phone with the eSIM compatibility checker, and run through the pre-trip checklist.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a voltage converter for my phone charger?
Usually not. Look at the small print on the charger: if it says INPUT 100–240V ~ 50/60Hz, it handles every destination on this page and you only need a plug adapter. Single-voltage appliances (some hair dryers, straighteners, kettles) are the ones that can be damaged.
What is the difference between an adapter and a converter?
An adapter only changes the shape of the plug so it fits the socket. A converter or transformer changes the voltage. Dual-voltage electronics need an adapter only.
Why do two sources show different plug types for some countries?
The IEC’s World Plugs list (the electrotechnical standards body) was retired; we cite its last archived version from November 2020. WorldStandards was updated in September 2025 and lists the types travellers mainly meet now. Where the IEC archive lists extra legacy types, we show them in the note so you can pack the right adapter.
Will my eSIM work if my phone battery dies?
No. An eSIM is part of the phone, so keep it charged. Bring the right adapter, and a power bank for long days. Our pre-trip checklist covers both.
