How much data do I need for a trip to mainland China?
Quick answers for a trip to mainland China, using the same activity rates as our data calculator — then the local gotchas that change real-world use, and the cheapest plans we listed in our China guide.
Quick answer: plan size by trip length
Pick the column that matches how you use your phone. Light is maps and messaging; Typical adds social and a little video; Heavy adds streaming and some hotspot. Figures are the plan size we’d buy after the 15% buffer — not a guarantee of your phone’s meter.

Estimates use the same formula as our eSIM data calculator: activity rates × hours/day × days, plus a 15% buffer, rounded up to 1 / 3 / 5 / 10 / 20 GB or unlimited. No hotel Wi‑Fi assumed. Checked methodology 4 November 2026.

What makes data use in China different
- Hotel Wi‑Fi and local SIMs use the domestic internet, where Google (including Gmail and Maps), WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, X and YouTube are generally blocked — Airalo’s help center lists these explicitly.
- Travel eSIMs are international roaming. Providers say your data is carried to an internet gateway outside mainland China before it reaches the web, so your phone “appears as an international roaming user.” Airalo and Nomad describe secure gateways abroad; Nomad notes exit points “vary depending on your plan and provider,” and that an eSIM is not a VPN (no extra encryption). Some travellers summarise this as routing via places like Hong Kong — providers themselves say the gateway location varies.
- Providers disagree on Google and WhatsApp: Airalo and Nomad say no separate VPN is needed on their China eSIMs; Holafly and Yesim advertise a VPN included; Saily says you’ll need a VPN for WhatsApp and Google sign‑in. We haven’t tested these claims — we report what they publish. See our China guide and China apps for foreigners.
- Join hotel Wi‑Fi and you’re back on the filtered domestic internet. Heavy app use may need to stay on the eSIM’s mobile data, which can raise your GB need versus other countries where hotel Wi‑Fi replaces mobile for streaming.
- Buy and install before you enter mainland China. Saily’s FAQ notes you can’t buy once you’re there, and phones made for the mainland market often lack eSIM.
Networks named in our guide: China Unicom, China Telecom and China Mobile appear across providers (Airalo names Unicom; Nomad names Unicom and Telecom; Ubigi names Telecom).

Frequently asked questions
How much data do I need for a week in China?
Typical use lands around 6 GB after the buffer — we round to a 10 GB plan. If you keep maps, translation and messaging on the eSIM because hotel Wi‑Fi is filtered (domestic Wi‑Fi blocks Google and WhatsApp), prefer 10 GB or unlimited rather than a tight 5 GB. Our China guide has full prices.
Will Google and WhatsApp work on a China travel eSIM?
Airalo and Nomad say yes without a VPN, because roaming data exits mainland China through gateways abroad. Holafly and Yesim say their plans include a VPN. Saily says you’ll need one. None of this applies on hotel Wi‑Fi.
Does a China eSIM route through Hong Kong?
Providers say traffic goes to a gateway outside mainland China; Nomad notes the exit point varies by plan and provider. Hong Kong is one common mental model travellers use, but it isn’t a guarantee on every plan. Read each provider’s China help page.
How does Signal Atlas calculate these numbers?
We use published planning rates (for example Netflix’s SD ≈ 0.7 GB/hr and Spotify Normal ≈ 72 MB/hr), multiply by hours per day and trip length, add a 15% buffer, and round up to a common plan size. Full methodology is on the calculator page.
