How much data do I need for a trip to Thailand?
Quick answers for a trip to Thailand, using the same activity rates as our data calculator — then the local gotchas that change real-world use, and the cheapest plans we listed in our Thailand guide.
Quick answer: plan size by trip length
Pick the column that matches how you use your phone. Light is maps and messaging; Typical adds social and a little video; Heavy adds streaming and some hotspot. Figures are the plan size we’d buy after the 15% buffer — not a guarantee of your phone’s meter.

Estimates use the same formula as our eSIM data calculator: activity rates × hours/day × days, plus a 15% buffer, rounded up to 1 / 3 / 5 / 10 / 20 GB or unlimited. No hotel Wi‑Fi assumed. Checked methodology 4 November 2026.

What makes data use in Thailand different
- Some of the lowest eSIM prices in Asia. That changes the maths: sizing up a tier often costs only a few dollars, so a comfortable buffer is cheap insurance.
- Island and beach days push hotspot and maps. Ferry Wi‑Fi is unreliable; if you’re navigating between islands or working from a bungalow, raise the hotspot and maps sliders.
- Regional Asia plans beat stacking country plans if you’re also hitting Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore or Indonesia. Airalo’s Asia plan starts from $4.00; Saily’s Asia and Oceania from $4.99 (22 countries) on the pages we checked — confirm every country is listed before you buy.
- Nomad says some Thailand plans include calls and texts — unusual for this region. Most others are data‑only; keep your home SIM for SMS codes.
Networks named in our guide: Airalo lists dtac; Holafly lists True / DTAC on the pages we read.

Frequently asked questions
How much data for 10 days in Thailand?
Typical use usually rounds to 5 or 10 GB. With hotel Wi‑Fi for streaming, many travellers stay on 5 GB. Full tables are in our Thailand & SE Asia guide.
Should I buy a Thailand plan or a regional Asia eSIM?
Thailand‑only if you’re staying put. Crossing into other SE Asian countries, check a regional plan’s country list — one eSIM can be cheaper than two installs.
Is unlimited worth it in Thailand?
Airalo’s 7‑day unlimited was $21 on dtac when we checked — often cheaper than oversizing a heavy week of hotspotting. For light use, a fixed 3–5 GB plan is enough.
How does Signal Atlas calculate these numbers?
We use published planning rates (for example Netflix’s SD ≈ 0.7 GB/hr and Spotify Normal ≈ 72 MB/hr), multiply by hours per day and trip length, add a 15% buffer, and round up to a common plan size. Full methodology is on the calculator page.
