How much data do I need for a trip to Japan?
Quick answers for a trip to Japan, using the same activity rates as our data calculator — then the local gotchas that change real-world use, and the cheapest plans we listed in our Japan guide.
Quick answer: plan size by trip length
Pick the column that matches how you use your phone. Light is maps and messaging; Typical adds social and a little video; Heavy adds streaming and some hotspot. Figures are the plan size we’d buy after the 15% buffer — not a guarantee of your phone’s meter.

Estimates use the same formula as our eSIM data calculator: activity rates × hours/day × days, plus a 15% buffer, rounded up to 1 / 3 / 5 / 10 / 20 GB or unlimited. No hotel Wi‑Fi assumed. Checked methodology 4 November 2026.

What makes data use in Japan different
Japan’s mobile networks are dense in cities, so coverage is rarely the hard part. The decisions that change how much data you burn are more practical:
- Maps stay light if you cache offline. Google Maps and Apple Maps work well; download offline areas for trains and walking routes so live navigation stays in the low tens of MB per hour.
- Pocket Wi‑Fi is a real alternative for groups. Airport rental counters are common, and one device can share to several phones. For a solo or couple trip an eSIM is usually simpler; for three or more non‑eSIM devices, price a pocket Wi‑Fi quote against one eSIM each — see our eSIM vs pocket WiFi vs roaming comparison.
- Hotel and café Wi‑Fi is widespread in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. Tick the Wi‑Fi option in the calculator if you’ll stream and back up photos on Wi‑Fi; that mainly cuts social, video and hotspot from the mobile estimate.
- Plans here are data‑only. Keep your home SIM on for bank and app SMS codes.
Networks named on the provider pages we checked: SoftBank and KDDI. Remote mountains and some islands can be weaker — every provider we read warns about that.

Frequently asked questions
How much eSIM data do I need for a week in Japan?
A typical week of maps, messaging, some social and light browsing lands around 6 GB after our 15% buffer — we round that to a 10 GB plan. Light use usually fits 3 GB; heavy streaming or hotspotting a laptop points to unlimited. Full Japan prices are in our Japan eSIM guide.
Is pocket Wi‑Fi better than an eSIM in Japan?
For a family or mixed devices, sometimes — one rental serves several phones. For one or two unlocked eSIM phones, a prepaid eSIM is usually cheaper and skips pickup/return. Compare a specific rental quote against the plan sizes in the table above.
Is 10 GB enough for two weeks in Japan?
For typical use with hotel Wi‑Fi for video, yes. Without Wi‑Fi, or with heavy social and hotspot, size up or pick a 14–15 day unlimited package from the Japan guide.
How does Signal Atlas calculate these numbers?
We use published planning rates (for example Netflix’s SD ≈ 0.7 GB/hr and Spotify Normal ≈ 72 MB/hr), multiply by hours per day and trip length, add a 15% buffer, and round up to a common plan size. Full methodology is on the calculator page.
